Travel Logistics

Participants may fly in to Managua Nicaragua, Liberia Costa Rica, or San Jose Costa Rica. Consider the following as you decide on flights:

- Note that the only airlines that fly into Nicaragua are Avianca, Copa, and Air Mexico (do not book on any other airline). Ground transportation from Managua to El Ostional is about 3.5 - 4 hours away.

- Liberia is the closest airport to the Nicaragua border (1.5 hours).

- San Jose is usually the most affordable airport to fly in to but requires a 5 hour drive to the border .

A negative PCR Covid test is required to enter Nicaragua. The test must be done within 72 hours of entering Nicaragua. You must email your negative PCR results to the airline and the Ministry of Health before flying. A paper copy is required to be presented as well.

The easiest and most economical option is flying to Costa Rica. When you arrive in Costa Rica, you will tell immigration that you are continuing on to Nicaragua and will be required to provide:

1) Proof of onward travel (return flights)

2) Proof of accommodation (we will provide this if you are going directly to El Ostional - otherwise provide your hotel or AirBnB reservation information)

3) Proof of negative PCR test

*Volunteers are required to purchase their own travel insurance

Accommodations

Participants will stay in home stays during the first few days in El Ostional. Meals will be provided by host families. We will then move to Granada (approximately 2.5 - 3 hours north) and reside together in a hostel.

Expedition Experiences

The first few days will be spent in El Ostional, a coastal farming village that works together to provide for and educate all in the community, and to conserve the local environment and history. Volunteer activities may include;

  • Working together with local villagers to protect the sea turtle population that arrive annually in El Ostional
  • Coastline cleanup
  • Bird counts
  • Providing after-school educational enrichment classes
  • Joining in local sports activities
  • Assisting with local farming efforts

Then volunteers will spend a few days in Granada, a vibrant colonial town 2.5-3 hours north of El Ostional. Here participants will assist in after-school educational enrichment classes, including skills training and cultural exchange activities.
Expeditions include education, environmental, and cultural excursions during the evenings and weekends. This may include:

  • Releasing baby sea turtles (can not be guaranteed)
  • Folk dancing
